The award<\/strong><\/h3>\nThe monetary award for the prize in its different categories will be as follows:<\/strong><\/h4>\n <\/p>\n
\n- First prize:<\/strong> EUR 5,000 for the best research project.<\/li>\n
- Youth Prize for the Basque University system:<\/strong> EUR 2,000 for a research project by a person from the Basque university system who, at the time of the research project deadline <\/strong>(10 April 2026) are 35 or under.<\/strong><\/li>\n
- One runner-up prize:<\/strong> EUR 2,000 for a research project selected by the Jury.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Evaluation criteria<\/strong><\/h3>\nThe evaluation criteria to award the Prize and select the runner-up prize<\/strong> are the scientific-technical quality of the projects and the relevance of their contributions.<\/p>\nThe Jury may award the Prize and\/or runner-up prize equally to several projects;<\/strong> in that event, they amounts envisaged in this call will be divided on a pro rata basis between the awarded projects.<\/p>\nFurthermore, the Jury may decide not to award the Prize and\/or runner-up prize<\/strong> if it deems that none of the entries meet the requirements or the necessary quality conditions.<\/p>\nThe Jury may unanimously agree to award a second runner-up prize<\/strong>, in the same terms as in the first runner-up prize.<\/p>\nIf the prize or runner-up prize are awarded to a project entered by a group,<\/strong> all the members of the group will be considered its beneficiaries for all relevant legal purposes. The amount of the prize or of the runner-up prize will be distributed according to the participation percentage that each working group has established for each of its members; should those percentages have not been specified, the prize will be divided equally between each member of the working group.<\/p>\nPayment:<\/strong><\/h3>\nThe prize-winners will receive the payment in two instalments. 35% will be paid at the time of the award and payment of the remaining 65% will be made once the evaluation committee has received and approved the final outcome of the project.<\/p>\n

Who may enter?<\/strong><\/h3>\nIndividuals with a university degree may enter.<\/p>\n
Individuals and work teams set up for the purpose of the prize are eligible to enter.<\/strong> In the case of working groups, the person heading the research<\/strong> team will be duly accredited. 2026 THEME: The European Union and Latin America: a strategic alliance in an unstable world.<\/h3>\n<\/h4>\nOverview:<\/strong><\/h4>\nThe growing instability of the international order, marked by the distancing of the United States, the questioning of multilateral norms, the use of coercion and force, and the geopolitical pressure exerted by emerging global actors, has prompted the EU to strengthen alliances with like-minded partners who share common values, interests, and visions.<\/p>\n
In this context, Latin America emerges as a priority strategic partner: both regions share a commitment to democracy, the rule of law, human rights, environmental sustainability, and effective multilateralism. Characterized by their internal diversity, the European Union (EU) and Latin America are at a crucial juncture in the reconfiguration of their interregional relationship.<\/p>\n
The recent reactivation of trade and political agreements, such as the one signed by the EU and Mercosur, the modernization of agreements with Mexico and Chile, and the revitalization of the EU-CELAC framework, present an opportunity to deepen a common agenda that combines political cooperation, green transition, digitalization, and shared prosperity. This research prize encourages individuals and research teams to offer an analysis and assessment of this new phase in EU-Latin America relations, combining legal, political, economic, and social perspectives.<\/p>\n
Research exploring the impact and opportunities this strategic alliance offers for the Basque Country will also be valued, both in terms of economic internationalization and technological cooperation, and in strengthening its historical and cultural ties with various Latin American countries.<\/p>\n
Reflections and analyses on the Atlantic world built since the 16th century, with its network of cross-influences, migrations, slavery, exile, and fruitful political dialogue since the era of liberal revolutions and the independence of the American nations, and how these complex relationships continue to influence mutual relations in the 21st century, will also be welcome.<\/p>\n
